The Greatest Thing in the World

Dear friend,
Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
The world has it’s own way of defining greatness. Bill Gates is considered great because of his genius and wealth. Barak Obama is called a great man because of his worldwide popularity. David Beckham is praised for his great athletic ability. The Beatles were considered great because of their innovative music. Nelson Mandela is remembered for his historic role in the end of apartheid. But, what about you?
While we can admire the God-given ability and accomplishments of the people listed above, there is something you can do that is much greater than the things that brought them fame. If you believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, then you have made the most important decision in the world. You have done the greatest thing any human creature can do. There is nothing more significant in this life than having a personal relationship with God in heaven! Accomplishing awesome things in the eyes of millions around the world will be of little use if you do not have eternal life in Christ.
Friend, have you done something great?
“Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater…yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he” (from Mt. 10:11).
Your servant,
Stephen

Hope in Christ

We have hope, because of the great day of the Lord.
- What is the great day of the Lord?
- What are the characteristics of the great day of the Lord?
- How do we respond to the great day of the Lord?
Scripture reading from Malachi 4:
1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. 3 And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts. 4 “Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel. 5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 6 And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”

Out of Debt Forever

Dear friend,
Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
Many people in the United States are losing their homes because they cannot pay their mortgage loans. Thankfully, our family will not be among them. We sold our house and paid off what we owed before moving to Jakarta. While, we do not own a house now, we also do not owe for one! In fact, shortly after the sale of our property in Alabama, I received a nice note from the bank. It said something like, “Congratulations, Mr. St. John! Your debt is paid. You owe nothing!” It was hard not to smile with happiness when reading that note!
Although it is not making headlines, people in the world today have a debt which is much greater than any financial concern. There is a debt owed for sin which we can not pay on our own. Some of you still have this huge note hanging over your heads. You have a burden which you are trying hopelessly to pay off through your own effort or you are ignoring the fact that God will call you to account one day. Let me share with you some good news. When the Lord Jesus gave His precious life on the cross, He died in order to pay off the debt of your sin. Those who believe in His sacrificial death and glorious resurrection receive from God a nice note. It says something like, “Your debt is paid. You owe nothing. You are forgiven.” A note like that will make you smile with happiness for all eternity!
Friend, do you believe this?
“And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross” (Col. 2:13-14).
