Jesus Has the Power We Need

Dear friends,
The other day the electric power company was doing some work on our street. They came by and told us our electricity would be shut off for about an hour while they completed their project. It was thoughtful of them to do this so we would know not to worry about the power being off. I noticed, however, that despite knowing better, I would still attempt to turn on the light every time I entered a room! After flipping the switch, I would say to myself, “Oh yeah. That doesn’t work. The power is out.”
This is similar to the way we often behave spiritually. We know that we do not have power over sin apart from Christ and yet too often we start flipping switches as if we could take care of things on our own. The trouble is - that does not work! We need the help of Jesus!
All of our efforts are not good enough. None of our attempts to solve spiritual problems on our own can succeed. “All of our righteous deeds are like filthy rags” (Is. 64″6a). Praise God that he does not require us to have power on our own. He sees our needs and sends our Savior. “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly” (Rom. 5:6).
Friends, some of you need to stop trying on your own. It does not work. Go instead to Jesus.
Your servant,
Stephen
