God’s Sovereignty Means His Grace is Always at Work

Dear friends,
Some people find it difficult to accept the Bible’s teaching that God is in sovereign control of the world. I am not one of those people. I do realize there is a great mystery here. Many questions come to our minds such as “What about natural disasters?” and “What about war?” Furthermore, there is the difficulty of reconciling God’s control over this world with human freedom and responsibility. Both truths are taught in the Bible. That is mysterious indeed.
Nevertheless, I cling tightly to the Bible’s promise that God “works all things according to the counsel of his will” (Eph. 1:11) and I trust the Almighty Creator to accomplish that in a way that does not violate his own justice or our own freedom.
Furthermore, we must remember there is great mercy in the idea that God reigns over all things, because it means he is still working even in the most difficult times. We can even dare to thank him for the pain that sometimes comes. God’s sovereignty means his grace is at work not only when everything seems to being going well, but also when all the world appears to be crashing down.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Rom. 8:28).

Stephen

And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach and have authority to cast out demons. He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him (Mark 3:13-19).
We must be with Jesus!
1. Jesus calls His disciples.
2. Jesus uses the ministry of men.
3. Jesus calls us to give ourselves to Him completely.

God’s Word Does Not Return Empty

Dear friends,
Here in Indonesia, the rain has come again. While it can be a real inconvenience sometimes, the rain serves a necessary purpose for which we can be thankful. The routine showers are needed to help our trees, flowers, and crops flourish. Without them, not only our plants, but civilization itself would begin to die!
God tells us his Word is like rain. We need a regular supply of it! And when it comes, it helps us grow. In fact, it brings life, for it is in the Word that we learn about Jesus Christ who can make us ready for eternity with God. So when you see the rain coming down today, remember, like the plants, you need nourishment too. Nourishment that comes when you open your Bible and let his message pour out!
“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it” (Is. 55:10-11).

Jesus is Different

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. When they heard all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. Whenever the evil spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” But he gave them strict orders not to tell who he was. Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve—designating them apostles—that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach (Mark 3:7-14).
We must tell others about Jesus, because Jesus is unlike any other.
1. Jesus does things his own way.
2. Jesus really changes lives.
3. Jesus is the Son of God.
