Mark 8:27-33 (English Standard Version):

27 And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” 30 And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

What does Jesus want us to learn here?

1. Jesus wants us to recognize that He is the Christ.
2. Jesus wants us to understand His purposes.
3. Jesus wants us to find grace in His patience.

A Mother’s Wisdom

Dear friends,

In America, this coming Sunday is Mother’s Day. I know I am just one of many millions who are thankful to God for giving them a loving mother. That is not to say, however, that my mother was not tough when she needed to be! She did not like excuses for sin. In fact I recall a time when she encouraged me to memorize the following scripture verse:

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will always provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Cor. 10:13).

This knowledge made it rather difficult for me to make excuses for the things I did that were displeasing in the eyes of God (or my mother). Her efforts to plant this in my heart prevented me from getting away with excuses. But I think she knew that I would be condemned by the verse too. I was condemned by it, because I gave into temptation. And this without excuse, because every sin was an offense against God, who had provided a route of escape.

Thankfully, mom (along with my dad) was quick to bring in the Good News. Although I was a sinner without excuse, Jesus had died for my sins. Faith in Him would deliver me! So, while she would never tolerate excuses for sin, she always had the antidote on her lips. No excuses. Trust Jesus.

Thanks Mom!

Your servant,

Stephen

The elders and deacons have formed a committee to consider searching for a Worship and Youth Pastor.  Please be in prayer for committee members Ian Beech, Rod McKay, Pastor Stephen, and Uran The.  If you have any questions or feedback for this committee, please speak with one of these men.

JIBC encourages Christian parents who are seeking to bring their children up in the Lord.  We pray for and support parents who send their kids to public or private schools and are providing Christian education in the home, we support those who are involved in Christian home schooling, and we support those who have their children in Christian schools.  Today we welcome Mr. David Michel, the new principal at SPH Kemang Village.  Any parents who are interested in learning more about this new Christian School option may meet with Mr. Michel after the service.  We would also like to welcome him and his family to Jakarta.

The JIBC elders are happy to allow Iwan Surna to conduct a survey of the congregation for his research project at Jakarta Baptist Theological Seminary.  Your participation in this survey is voluntary, the survey is anonymous, and the individual results will remain confidential.  Iwan and his volunteer assistants will begin conducting this survey today.

Parents, Please disregard the announcement about Preteens on May 7. The Preteens will only meet once a month on Saturday (not Friday). Date will be announced later. I am sorry and APOLOGIZE for the confusion made. Thank you, Mrs. Edna
