The JIBC Elders Discussion on Membership Changes

Pastor Stephen read this prayer request and announcement from the elders on Sunday July 3:

“The elders have been discussing and praying about the meaning of church membership at JIBC for much of this year. Our desire is to have a church body life that conforms as closely as possible with the New Testament pattern.

The elders are considering that it would be good to no longer have associate membership at JIBC, but only membership. Obviously this raises a lot of questions. If we were to do this, we would need to address all those who are currently associate members, the issue of baptism, and the issue of maintaining membership in another congregation. But the reason we are mentioning this now is so that we may all be praying together as we discuss this matter. Furthermore, these changes would not be up to the elders alone, but to the entire church membership.

The elders also recommend re-adopting a document such as the 1989 JIBC Membership Covenant. This is a short document (just a few paragraphs) that every member signed indicating their understanding of the meaning and function of church membership. It is very clear, biblical, and we think will help clear up any misunderstandings about membership. Again, we are only asking you to pray about that now and we will share more on this topic in the coming months.

Anyone is invited to attend and hear what is going on around JIBC. The meeting starts at 7 PM and ends at 9 PM.

Starting May 22 at 9:15 AM, you are invited to attend one of two new Sunday Morning Adult Bible Studies. If you have never been to an ABS, this is a great time to start with either of two options: The Discipleship Track: Deepening Your Roots in God’s Family or The Essential Topics Track: Proclaim Evangelism. There is a sign up sheet for the Proclaim Course on the welcome table. Please sign up today so we can order material. You do not need to sign up for Deepening Your Roots, just show up on May 22!
